Artist's Statement
As an artist, I am continually frustrated by the amount of time it takes me to create a quality piece of work. If only I had the ability to bring the ideas and images in my head to life instantly, or near instantly, I would never have to leave another idea unexplored due to time restraints. This frustration and subsequent desire often manifest themselves as a fantasy, or daydream, in which I have somehow obtained a supply of 'Magic Paint'. Simply think of an image and open the can. The wet paint magically contains the image, which appears as the paint is applied.
In this series of mixed media installation pieces, I have attempted to transport the viewer into my artistic fantasy by creating the illusion that the laws of reality no longer apply to my art making process. The viewers should feel as though they have just entered my studio, where I have taken a break after quickly testing out a newly acquired stash of 'Magic Paint'.
Through these pieces, I also seek to explore the nature of our fast-paced/quick fix/touch-of-a-button culture through the magnifying glass of my own desire for an easy solution. If I had access to magic paint would my skills still progress? Would it be a tool or a crutch? What if others had access? What if everyone had access? Would they all become artists and cover the world with the images of their minds? Would talent become irrelevant? Would the ability to create quality artwork unassisted eventually become lost forever?
